Demand for workers in several key occupations has increased across the European Union, reflecting changing labour market needs and growing skills shortages.

According to Eurostat data, some of the most in-demand roles in 2024 were found in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, transport and health services, where employers continue to face difficulties in filling positions.

The data highlights a strong need for both manual and technical occupations, as well as essential service roles. This suggests that labour shortages are not limited to highly specialised jobs, but also affect core sectors of the economy.

These trends point to a growing mismatch between the skills available in the workforce and those required by employers. In many cases, companies struggle to recruit workers with the right qualifications or experience.

For young people and entrepreneurs, this creates both opportunities and challenges. High demand in certain occupations can facilitate access to employment, but also underlines the importance of acquiring relevant skills and training.

At the same time, businesses — especially SMEs — may face increasing pressure due to labour shortages, which can limit growth and productivity.

JEUNE considers that addressing skills gaps and improving alignment between education and labour market needs is essential to support both young people and businesses in a rapidly evolving economy.

Overall, the data highlights a tightening labour market, where ensuring access to skills and workforce development will be key to sustaining economic growth across the European Union.
